²⁴ The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are your disciples doing what is forbidden on the Sabbath?”

²⁵ He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? ²⁶ He entered the house of God when Abiathar^[a] was high priest and ate the sacred bread that only the priests were permitted to eat, and he shared it with his companions.”
